The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists ETS as a Group A carcinogen which causes about 3,000 deaths from lung cancer among non-smokers in the USA, and contains seventy toxic, cancer-causing chemicals. (Health Effects of Exposure).The third reason to ban smoking in public places is because ETS is particularly harmful to children. Children exposed to second hand smoke are very susceptible to lung diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and wheezing. They suffer from frequent m iddle ear infections. ETS is the cause of fulminant Infant Death Syndrome, in which infants die unexpectedly because of nicotine in their lungs and interference with the breathing regulation tool of the brain.
